Glencoe High School’s robotics club Team Shockwave won the Rookie All-Star Award last week at the FIRST Robotics Competition World Championship in St. Louis.  Team Shockwave was judged as the best new team in its division and in the top four among 300 rookie teams in the world, said coach Chris Steiner in an email.
The Rookie All-Star Award is the most prestigious recognition given to first year teams, Steiner said. The award recognizes teams that fulfill FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics standards for engineering excellence and community outreach.

Team Shockwave supported FIRST LEGO League activities in Hillsboro schools, met with local government and education officials to build support for STEM programming in local schools, and teaches teenagers the skills needed for engineering and technical work in local high-tech industries.  Professional engineers donate hundreds of hours to mentor Shockwave students in computer programming, electrical and mechanical engineering, graphic design, and business. The engineers model FIRST’s expectations for “gracious professionalism” and guide students to be responsible and productive members of society, Steiner said.

In March, Team Shockwave won the Autodesk Oregon Rookie All-Star Award, which included an invitation to compete at the World Championship.

Anyone interested in supporting the team should contact business@glencoerobotics.com or call Chris Steiner at 503-844-1500.

We had about 30 people show up for our awards dessert on April 20,2013 at the Knights of Pythias Ivanhoe Lodge No. 1 including David Ashton the reporter for the Bee. (Thank you Mr. Ashton for the team picture)

Communication award winners were seniors Thomas Hubel who took the communication skills he learned at robots and joined his school’s Constitutional Law debate team, and Chase Foreman who did the team interview in the Pits at this year’s regional competition.

Step Up award winner was senior Duncan Moats for his never failing to step up and do whatever needed to be done even when it wasn’t a fun or prestigious.

Most Accomplished Freshman went to Lewis Hicks for having to take on the role of Programming team captain when the sub team captain was busy with the Constitutional Law competitions.  Congratulations for getting us an autonomous program.
